About Julia S.
I am passionate about supporting learners coming to music and the clarinet for the first time, or returning after a break, to gain new skills, confidence and most importantly, to have fun playing!
I have experience private tutoring learners of all ages – adults and children - from beginner up to Grade 5, including supporting preparation for ABRSM exam entry.
I am an amateur musician and have played the clarinet for over 20 years. I have a BA degree in Music from the University of York and a DipABRSM diploma in clarinet performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
I work with students to achieve their personal goals – whether it is playing in an orchestra or music group for the first time, taking formal music exams, or simply playing for yourself at home!
Lessons follow the pace of the student and include sight reading, aural skills and music theory to underpin instrumental learning.
When I was a student myself, I performed in the National Youth Music Theatre, involving a nationwide tour of a show, including live radio and television performances on the BBC. As a member of a student jazz band I performed at the Edinburgh Festival, Royal Festival Hall, Labour Party conference, and Royal Ascot. I studied clarinet with Lesley Schatzberger and after graduation took lessons with Guy Cowley, principal clarinettist of the English Baroque Soloists.
