About Julia
I am an experienced, enthusiastic and patient piano and music theory teacher. Lessons are structured around individual goals, supporting the development of secure foundations of technique and understanding music notation. Some of my more experienced students have achieved medals for their performances which has given them a lasting legacy of musical achievement. It is simply a lifetime skill developed both within and outside of formal grades.
Teaching Experience:
My ABRSM Teaching Diploma supports my twenty years experience of helping students learn to play music they love. This includes guiding students through ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses.
My experience of teaching covers a wide age range from the ages of three to seventy. Early face to face lessons include my own composition duets. My lessons also focus on providing the best possible learning experience and I use creative tools to maintain interest in practice.
I have also been lucky enough to meet students who have extra challenges such as dyslexia, poor eyesight and anxiety. In partnership with parents, I have developed strategies to overcome any obstacles that the complexity of music may bring.
I enjoy teaching people of all ages and ability. My own repertoire interest includes music from Bach to Coldplay.
Beginner lessons:
First lessons start with an introduction of a student's musical knowledge and understanding their motivation for learning to play the piano. This is followed by an imtroduction to the keyboard and musical alphabet.
Aural awareness is integrated from the start - considering pitch and dynamics. I use soft balls to start building finger strength and introduce warm ups to explore contrasting techniques on the piano. Some students will have no knowledge of music notation and this starts to be learnt simultaneously, looking at where notes are placed on the music in relation to it's position on the keyboard.
First rhythms are played and there may be a brief listen to different musical styles. Own composition music including duets is used to create interest in early lessons and reinforce first notes. This helps to start creating music even with a small range of notes and rhythms.
Practice suggestions will always include technical exercises at first learnt by memory and a small piece worked on in the lesson. A manuscript boo...
