About Judy P

Judy, a graduate of Royal Academy of Music London, is an experienced international professional orchestral and chamber musician who is also a passionate teacher. She has taught at Winchester College, Benenden School for Girls, London College of Music Junior Department, Bluthners Piano School, Tchaikovsky London Piano School and in Oman for the Royal Oman Symphony and Muscat Royal Philharmonic Orchestras/Schools.

Currently she teaches privately in and around Central South West, North West and West London. At present she only has time in her diary to take on new pupils who can have their lessons during weekdays 1000-1400 or Tuesdays 1500-1615 in the W1, W2 and W14 areas of London.

Teaching Style + Approach for Piano + Oboe
I take a classic approach in the music lessons, which all include, scales, arpeggios, studies, sight-reading, improvisation whilst also working through a variety of pieces. I ensure that correct technique is taught to ensure that my pupils gain strength and an easy ability so that their playing is more effortless. I am experienced at preparing pupils for ABRSM exams from Grade 1-Diploma.

Teaching Oboe
I can adjust reeds and help students learn how to do this.

Teaching Theory + Aural
All students are taught theory and aural at the level suitable to support their understanding of performance. Judy teaches 'sol-fah', so that students can sight-sing more easily.

Genre
I teach note-based classical music. And have experience teaching the following genres: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, Avant-Garde, Jazz and Blues.

First Lesson
Judy uses the first lesson to understand what the student is hoping to achieve and to then explain how she would go about teaching the pupil to gain this goal. Judy is extremely musical and so can inspire her pupils to create levels of music they may not have been aware of. Coupled with her thorough approach to practically dealing with technical problems and her genuine enthusiasm, pupils are often more willing to work harder and so do achieve their goals with high standards.

Beginners
All beginners must have an instrument they can practise on regularly. Judy can advise as to where to hire an instrument or purchase a good instrument second-hand. All pupils must expect to purchase their own music. Again this can sometimes be purchased or sold 2nd hand through Judy.

Please feel free to write Judy a message if you are interested in signing up for lessons or if you have any questions.

"Judy has been teaching piano to my daughter more than a year now. Since she started my daughter’s music skills are improved a lot. Unlike the previous experiences, she is not just memorising but reading and understanding the notes, rhythms and pieces. She now can play new music easily, even she is writing small pieces by herself. I am all thankful to Judy’s passion for music and her strict but friendly way of teaching."

"Judy has taught both my children, and is the only teacher I'd ever want for them (and for myself too!). She is very passionate about music and is an engaging and enthusiastic. She employs a very holistic approach, building an incredibly solid foundation across both practical and theory. She is supportive, nurturing and encouraging and has takes the time to get to know the students as individuals and to understand what makes them tick. She is an excellent teacher and I'd highly recommend her."

Judy is the dream piano teacher. I am so glad that I found a teacher that is the best for my five-year-old son. She is the music/piano teacher I wished I had growing up. Just to put it into context, I had many teachers! She is very in tune with teaching a young boy. She has a good balance of being fun and at the same time expecting concentration and rigour of approach. She reinforces the need to listen, feel, and follow the beat/ rhythm. I think also she combines her lessons very well with piano practice and theory. The teaching books she recommended are very appropriate for my child’s age. Judy is very knowledgeable in teaching a young boy who is very distractable, loves to dance while playing the piano, and has short attention spans. She has much patience and appreciates his uniqueness. My son says, “Judy is 100% the best teacher!” He also has a music teacher in school, but he learns the most with Judy. Judy, thank you for your weekly effort and building my child’s confidence and enjoyment of music. Since you have started teaching my son, I have continuously noticed his progress. I am very proud of him and grateful for your teaching.

I thoroughly enjoyed my lesson with Judy and I found her to be extremely articulate . Judy was very helpful in accommodating myself as a complete beginner and encouraged me to continue to learn the piano further.

I am a ucl student and I am very lucky to have met msjudy. She is very caring before the course. On a cold day, she pours me a cup of hot tea to warm my hands. During the lesson, she was very sensitive to my technical shortcomings in playing the piano and would explain my specific mistakes in an easily understandable way and help me to correct them. At the same time she would go through the selection of materials for my mistakes and explain in detail the reasons for practicing them. At the same time, she would give me very detailed instructions on how to practice after the lesson, giving me a very clear sense of purpose. After taking her lessons, it was obvious to me that my control of my fingers had improved and I was more able to handle the details in the piece. Also, the piece I was going to perform was much more beautiful with her suggestions!
