Josh is a professional musician who teaches singing, piano and music production to pupils age 7 and above. He has a first class Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music from the University of York and three ABRSM Grade 8 distinctions in piano, singing and clarinet. Josh is often found working as a musical director and regularly conducts choirs, orchestras and musical theatre groups.
Josh has worked as an instrumental and classroom music teacher in a number of secondary schools in the UK and overseas (including extended posts in Kenya and Japan) so has a lot of experience working with young people at all levels of musical education. Josh has also worked as a cathedral choral scholar and so is especially familiar with singing of this sort. Currently, the majority of Josh's time is spent working in music production as a songwriter and producer. Josh is highly proficient in Logic Pro X and Sibelius computer programmes.
Beginner singing pupils can expect to start off by learning some simple warm-up songs, with a focus on controlling their tone and maintaining support throughout their range. We would then apply this to a song, firstly one of their choice, to aid with familiarity, but later chosen with some recommendations from Josh. Josh teaches musical theatre and classical singing and is happy to prepare pupils for ABRSM and RockSchool exams.
Beginner piano pupils will quickly learn how to identify all the different keys on the keyboard and then start to build up control over all five fingers on each hand. We'll start to learn the basics of music notation and theory very soon as we build a strong connection between what's on the page and what's beneath the fingers. Josh teaches classical and pop piano and is happy to prepare pupils for ABRSM exams.
Beginner music production students will learn how to implement the basic tools of EQ, compression, delay and reverb into a simple track, which we will use as the basis for discussing gradually more complicated digital audio techniques. Josh will draw on his background in songwriting and composition to hone the pupils' musical ideas and bring them to fruition. Josh teaches pop and electronic music production.
