About Josh W.
BA (Hons.) Music Composition, DipABRSM (Piano Performance). Pianist, producer and composer for films, stage productions and video games. Winner of Southend Music Festival piano section 2018.
Eight years experience teaching across a variety of ages and abilities, from 4 to 70, from beginners and casual hobbyists to advanced grades and undergraduate students. Josh has taught in a diverse range of educational settings, including home and online tuition, private music studios, schools (as both a peripatetic music tutor and teaching assistant), and charities (working in Southend YMCA's music studio).
A flexible and personalised approach to teaching, which caters for each student's individual needs and ambitions without ever losing sight of what is required to achieve technical proficiency and sound musical understanding. Students are encouraged from an early stage to try to learn pieces by themselves, in order to cultivate self-reliance and strong sight reading skills. When teaching children, Josh likes to work closely with parents to help them support their child's learning. Josh's areas of speciality are classical, contemporary classical, soundtracks, and electronic music but he is comfortable teaching all styles. Where appropriate, Josh can teach towards graded exams grades, and has a 100% pass rate. Josh host's an annual showcase for students in order for them to gain experience performing, and to motivate and inspire each other.
Your first lesson will be a friendly and relaxed get-to-know-you session, where we can discuss your previous experience, your interests, and your ambitions/goals. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they know (whether that's any music or exercises already learned, or theoretical knowledge). If you have any learning material (sheet music, theory etc) or recordings of your work please be sure to have it to hand.
