About Joseph Shaw
Joseph Shaw is a British composer, artist and tutor based in Leeds (UK). He has worked for over ten years as a performing musician in the UK and across Europe, as part of both amateur and professional productions. I hold an MMus in Composition and Artistic Research with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music. My instrumental tuition has primarily been for pupils between the ages of five and fifteen: supporting their work towards exams, developing live performance skills and helping them to understand elements of music theory as a basis of their learning. Using the syllabi of exam boards such as Rockschool as a guide, I aim to employ an effective and flexible approach to learning, which balances the development of instrumental technique with allowing students to customise their learning where applicable.
His work has been presented performed and work-shopped by ensembles including the Aber:ri Duo, Absolution Saxophone Quartet, Angeli Che Cantano, BBC Singers, Fox Valley Voices, Inyerface Arts, Manchester Camerata, Meraki Duo, Psappha, RNCM Brand New Orchestra, RNCM Contemporary Music Society, the RNCM New Music Ensemble and the Sheffield Music Academy Chamber Orchestra and many others UK-wide and abroad.
Joseph is currently the musical director of both Penistone Ladies Choir and Saddleworth Singers. He has made guest appearances as an assistant director with choirs across the North of England in both works of his own and music from a wide range of the choral repertoire. Alongside a particular passion for engaging with choral music, he is kept busy by other activities including recording and teaching.
Joseph holds both a Bachelor with Honours degree (2017) and a Masters in Composition and Artistic Research (2020) from the Royal Northern College of Music. His tutors included Professor Gary Carpenter, Professor Adam Gorb and Dr Larry Goves. He also studied at the Sheffield Music Academy from 2006 to 2013, with Callum Dewar and Dr Tom Owen. In 2020 he was shortlisted for the RNCM Gold Medal, the conservatoires most prestigious award.
