About Joseph

Whatever your age and ability I can help you improve in a fun and engaging way!

I have taught a wide variety of students from absolute beginners all the way through to post music college professionals and from primary age through to adults.

I teach all styles but my specialisms lie in classical guitar, jazz, blues, funk, flamenco, bossa nova, music theory, and bass. I also have an extensive background in composition and musicology.

I have a holistic approach to music education that draws on elements from the Kodaly method. I tailor each lesson to the individual student’s needs and make sure each lesson is fun and engaging. My students have had a 100% grade pass rate at merit or higher and I am familiar with ABRSM, Trinity, and Rockschool exam boards.

A bit more about me.....
I graduated from the University of Bristol in 2017 with First Class Honours in Music BA with the Thomas Beecham Award for outstanding performance. Alongside studying classical guitar, my degree also focused on musicology, composition, and harmony giving me a well-rounded understanding of music. I continued my studies at King’s College London, graduating with Distinction in Musicology (Mmus) in 2022. During the course of my studies I developed a deep understanding of, not only the technical and physical elements of playing and composing music, but also the social and historical contexts which music is situated in. Having this breadth of knowledge to share with my students aids them in their overall musical development alongside the practical elements of instrument playing.

I have over 10 years of gigging experience, having performed literally hundreds (if not close to a thousand) concerts across many different styles and in many different contexts. Some recent highlights include, The Pizza Express Jazz Club (Dean Street, Soho), The Cockpit Theatre, EFG London Jazz Festival, The Vortex, amongst many others. I also have been running a weekly jazz jam session in North London for 4 years. As a composer I have had pieces performed at Sanctum and the Edinburgh Fringe and I have plenty of experience in arranging for and conducting student ensembles as well as professional groups.

Over the years I have taught 100s of students to play the guitar. This wealth of teaching experience, from teaching absolute beginners right the way though to grade 8 and beyond, ages from 4 to 74, has developed...
