About Jonas Golland

I’m a musician who truly has fun teaching and learning, with an honours Bachelor’s degree from Tech Music Schools (now BIMM). Drum set has been my first instrument since 1993 and throughout my studies and work experience. Guitar, vocals and piano are my secondary instruments since the 1990s. I'm drawn to composition, but I also see it as one of the key tools in learning to play an instrument with confidence and apply new skills. I teach grades, and can help to navigate the options contained in them. And I can help guide you to purchasing the right instruments cost effectively.

After nearly a decade of tutoring experience, and going through university, I also had experience in student and disability support. I stopped everything in 2015 to play internationally with a cabaret band for 5 years in devised theatre and concerts, drawing on my theatre experience. This included many highlights including recording with the Berg Orchestra live in Prague (Devil’s Fairground by Tiger Lillies).

In 2012 I built a studio where I teach, rehearse and record jazz-funk, psychedelic rock, metal, progressive rock, improvised music, and more. I played with many artists including Tiger Lillies, Michael Rosen, Pete Maas, Toby Nowell, The Wailers, Ceri James, Psychoyogi and Rude Mechanicals to name a few. I'm currently the drummer for third-stream ensemble Perfect Stranger (perfectstranger.band), and we have recorded the first album at Air Studios in London.

When touring dried up in the lockdowns, I updated my teaching approach and underwent more training in Safeguarding, and related topics. Then my teaching experience spread to Dalston, and I also taught and did recording sessions at David Game College, and more recently in Islington. I run Zoom, Teams and Google Meet in a dedicated home studio, which is also my recording studio where I have produced albums for Jowe Head, Gardyloo Spew and Anthony Sobati The Teacher.

I often play relevant examples for students to get them in the habit of listening. We build a foundation of effective practice strategies, and get straight into technique for drummers: dynamics, Moeller stroke, stick control, dynamic pressure, and personal ergonomics to avoid injury and bad habits. Reading music is an important skill but not at the expense of listening and internalising. This goes for guitarists and pianoists as well who need a broad range of material, scales, arpeggios and aural training...
