About John
John is a London-based musician with a passion for teaching lessons in piano, composition and music theory. His multi-disciplinary musical practice makes him a dynamic and empathetic tutor committed to a joyful music-making experience for his students. Whether you are a beginner who has never touched a piano, or a more experienced player wanting to take your performance to the next level, John can confidently guide you in your musical journey.
John challenges his students to make music an integral part of their daily lives, and he works closely with students to find a routine that is both sustainable and goal-oriented. Some of his advanced students have gone on to pursue music at top level conservatoires, including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Berklee School of Music.
Piano lessons are offered in-person at the student’s home, and composition & music theory lessons are offered either in-person or online.
Piano Lessons
John balances teacher-selected pieces with student-selected ones so that the student is always working on music they love the most. The student can expect to be assigned weekly technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc.) to build up their playing ability, as well as music-reading assignments to improve their sight-reading skills. Lessons are designed around a sustainable method of performance so that the student can enjoy a lifetime of music making. The student must have access to an instrument (either an acoustic piano or an electric keyboard with 88 weighted keys and a pedal).
Composition/Theory Lessons
John welcomes all styles of music and focuses on building a student’s confidence and technical ability to develop their sound. He helps the student decide what kind of a piece they want to write (ensemble, duration, style, etc.) and provides them with ways to explore their musical ideas and begin sketching a new piece. He assigns exercises in aural skills and music theory along with relevant reading and listening material. The student should have access to music notation software (Sibelius, Finale, MuseScore, etc.) but handwritten notation is acceptable.
For the best results, John recommends regular, once-weekly lessons of 30-60 minutes in duration.
