About John B
I'm John, an American-born multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer based in London. For over a decade I’ve helped musicians of all ages and abilities learn jazz piano and bass.
My students are passionate about finding their sound. While they long to perform with musical freedom, making this journey alone can often feel daunting, even discouraging. This is where I step in, guiding students through jazz harmony, improvisation, theory, technique, and repertoire with personalised structure.
My approach was developed through experience as a tutor, performer, and student, first in Detroit and now in London. I teach students in person and online from my studio, working with musicians from across the UK and abroad. Alongside 1-to-1 lessons, I've taught groups for institutions like the University of Michigan's youth programmes, the Duke Ellington Conservatory, the Williams Syndrome Association, the Ann Arbor Blues Society, and Olby's Creative Hub. These experiences honed my ability to communicate jazz concepts clearly and build trust with students.
As a performer, I've worked with jazz, blues, gospel, and soul artists like Antwaun Stanley, Shana Wilson, Jack Hues, Jax Anderson, Doug Sides, and Kara Grainger. Having played legendary venues like Baker's Keyboard Lounge and worked in recording studios in the US and UK, I bring real-world experience to every lesson.
My formal music training includes studies at the University of Michigan, Berklee College of Music, and Canterbury Christ Church University, but my best lessons have come directly from my mentors, including Barry Harris, Bob Hurst, Geri Allen, and Barry Green. My students learn the same principles these masters taught me.
If you love jazz and want to find your sound, let me know how I can help. What are you working on? What are your challenges and goals? Let’s start working toward playing the music you love.
