About Johan D. C.
Jay has been teaching piano, music theory, harmony, composition and music technology for the past 18 years in London, Ascot and Brighton: all ages (5 - 90), embracing all musical styles (mostly classical, but also Jazz, Rock, Pop and EDM), and all levels from absolute beginners, to advanced classical diploma students and electronic DJ / producers.
Whether online or in person, having a lesson, or having to play in front of someone, can be intimidating and very scary! Jay has a tremendous amount of patience and experience with starting beginners from scratch, and strongly believes that it is never too late to start learning a musical instrument.
Piano / keyboard technique is approached in an open-minded, relaxed and tension-free manner, incorporating the best bits of the different piano schools. Lessons are tailored to each individual student, and may incorporate music theory, ear training, sight-reading, improvisation, songwriting, music history, or computer technology, depending on the student’s needs.
Although very happy to take students through GCSE’s, A-Levels, Royal Schools (including the Jazz syllabus), Trinity Guildhall and Rock School exams, his focus is on having fun and helping students to express themselves creatively. Most of all, Jay feels passionate about equipping students with the diverse skills that they need to navigate our modern world of digital music, eg. social media promotion, musicians’ mental health, digital distribution, etc.
