About Joel
Hey, I'm Joel! I teach absolute beginners to more experienced players in creative ways that place an emphasis on making music lessons musical, as well as supplement the learning process with as much tea and coffee as is required. Whatever your age or experience, I’d be delighted to work with you on material that appeals to you. I have played guitar for twenty years, during which time I've enjoyed a ton of different styles. What do you want to learn?
For newcomers to the guitar:
People’s interest in learning an instrument usually boils down to this: They want to learn to play the music they like listening to. In which case, my approach to teaching beginners is, yes, let’s learn that stuff!
Who are your favourite artists? What are your favourite tracks and albums? These are the important questions. As a teacher, I look back on my earliest guitar lessons as a learner and realise the significance of my teacher’s emphasis on teaching me the music I enjoyed listening to.
First and foremost, let’s get you playing the music you enjoy, and let’s see where that takes you!
For more experienced players:
I take a similar approach here as I would with any other learner: What do you want to work on?
I have a broad approach to playing guitar and am proficient in a wide variety of styles and techniques. Whatever you are inclined to work on, I will help you further develop your technique and knowledge of the guitar. At some point during your musical path you might feel stuck in a rut (it has happened to me a bunch of times), and being inspired by new ideas, shapes, and techniques is a sure way to spice things up and get back on track. I don’t like to make a list of techniques as though they are the pinnacle of guitar knowledge, but a range of topics that may be fun to cover as a more experienced player may include: Modes, tapping, three notes per string shapes, triads and arpeggios, chromatic runs, and a ton more of that good stuff.
I teach technique to be applied musically. In the instance that you feel your solos are a little stagnant using the same licks but are worried you will be overwhelmed by a bunch of inapplicable nonsense… don’t be! I build on a student’s prior knowledge by introducing new ideas that can expand their current abilities, and not disregard them.
Music theory:
I have a wide understanding of music theory that encompasses Berklee’s Harmony 1-4 curriculum, as well as core Tonal Harmony, Counterpoint, and Ear-Training. Topics I have covered with my current students include: Scales and Modes, Roman Numeral Analysis, Harmony, Solfége, and Sight-reading. I find a great approach to teaching theory involves some form of visual reference. For some people this can be a fretboard, and for others a keyboard. Just bring a pen and manuscript and let’s go from there!
