About Joe S.

My experience as a songwriter and performer on multiple instruments as well as my work in live and studio sound engineering informs my approach to teaching with a student's specific abilities and goals in mind.

Throughout my years as a musician I've performed at a wide variety of venues on various instruments - from playing in a guitar orchestra with Adrian Utley of Portishead, touring Europe as a drummer in a Blues/Soul group 'Scarlet Ridge' and performing regularly at weddings and private functions.

I have worked on numerous projects as a sound engineer at ROFL Audio recording studios - from creating hip-hop beats from scratch to recording full big band arrangements. For other clients I produced Karaoke backing tracks challenging me to recreate a soundalike from scratch using every tool in my musical arsenal. Passing on these experiences I can be sure that my students have a fast track to a broad set of practical skills.

Working as a live sound engineer with 14-piece bands in nation-wide theatre shows has also shown me a deeper insight into the variety of routes a musician can take as well as emphasising what's expected from a professional musician.

Whilst studying composition at Leeds College of Music, I specialised in modules in song-writing, performance and instrument study. I really gained an appreciation for the valuable results of the structured and goal-based syllabus. I base my own lessons on these rigorous standards to ensure the most personalised and effective lessons possible.

Most of my own study of instruments began from books, chord sheets and tabs online. Studying GCSE music and taking my ABRSMs music theory exam opened my eyes to a more academic side of music. Having experience of both self-tuition and more regimented pathways helps me to provide a balance and flexible approach to my tuition as well as a first-hand understanding of the curriculum myself.

I've taught students from a wide variety of ages and competencies - old and young; solo and group; first timers, self-taught, inter-instrumental disciplines and everything in between. So feel free to get in touch and I'll be happy to answer any questions and get you booked in for a lesson.
