About Jo Chew BA(Hons), PGCEi, ARSM

I have 12 years of full time violin teaching experience, along with recent professional development from my Masters/PGCEi in instrumental teaching from Birmingham City University . I also have a BA in Music. I believe that high achievement takes place in the framework of high expectations and would love to bring my expertise and enthusiasm to each and everyone of my pupils.

I started learning violin myself at 4 years of age, and have had many opportunities to perform in renowned venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall. It is a privilege to teach young talented musicians to play and perform the violin to a high standard. I have taught all school ages from 3-18 and all Grades of violin from 1-8. Recently one of my 14 year old pupils achieved a very high grade 8 distinction. I also have experience teaching post Grade 8 Diploma level. I also teach Grade 5 theory with many of my pupils gaining distinctions.

I am passionate and enthusiastic about children achieving their full potential, both educationally and outside of education. I believe that music can advance academic achievement, teaching pupils to become fearless in-front of audiences big or small, and that it can have have a life-long positive impact. Having taught at a Saturday music school for the past 7 years in Gloucestershire where the cultural climate of music making is infectious, I have now recently located to Oxford, for the vibrant culture of music within the city.

I encourage all my pupils to get involved with ensembles as enculturation among peers makes such a positive impact on an individual’s musical learning; nothing quite compares.
