About Jenny
Learning an instrument is a fun and rewarding process which can help develop life-long confidence and enthusiasm for music. Jenny is offering piano and music theory lessons online and around Edinburgh for all ages and abilities.
The first lesson
It can be daunting taking up lessons and meeting a new teacher, but Jenny will do her best to help you feel comfortable and answer any questions you may have. She will have a chat with you about your goals and expectations from lessons. Are you wanting to learn for fun? Do you have a specific goal, performance, or exam you would like help preparing for?
Complete beginners are very welcome. In the first lesson Jenny will cover some of the basics of technique, pulse, rhythm, and character, and help you start feeling at home at the piano. In order to get the most out of lessons, it is recommended that students keep a practice diary, so do bring along a spare notebook if you have one!
If you have played before, it is a good idea to bring some music along to the lesson to give Jenny an idea of the level you are playing at and the kind of music you would like to learn. She can then recommend appropriate exercises and pieces to work on.
Students will need access to a piano or keyboard to practise on between lessons, and students are responsible for purchasing their own books, if any.
What to expect from lessons?
To get the most out of Jenny’s teaching, it’s recommended that students attend lessons at regular intervals – usually weekly or bi-weekly. 30-minute lessons are an ideal length for children and beginners, but those working at a more advanced level may benefit from longer lessons. Lessons will typically include physical warm up exercises, musicianship exercises such as sightreading, aural, or improvisation, and then pieces, which Jenny can help you practise during the lesson.
What’s most important is that you feel that you are at the centre of your learning and that playing is something you enjoy. Jenny is classically trained and specializes in teaching music which is notated. She can support you to prepare for ABRSM/ Trinity graded exams if this is something you are interested in, including the grade 5 theory exam.
