Jemma is an experienced Woodwind teacher based in Epsom. She currently teaches at City of London Freemens School , The Laurels School, Kingswood House School and Riddlesdown Collegiate.

Jemma’s approach to teaching is structured but student-led. Unlike many teachers, she allows students an entirely free choice in the pieces that they learn in almost all cases, which is very popular with her current pupils. Her teaching has a particular focus on sight-reading and wider musical-knowledge rather than just learning pieces, which allows her students to become more independent learners. As her references demonstrate, the first priority of her teaching is for students to feel that they are cared for but encouraged to excel. She is accepting, warm and nurturing, providing her students with strong guidance, while also nurturing personal responsibility.

A typical first lesson will involve discussion of the student’s musical interests and aspirations, as well as their previous experience. The student should bring their instrument and any accessories needed to play (if they have one) and any music that they have played recently, as well as any theory books. Jemma has 100% ABRSM/Trinity Exam pass-rate with the majority of students achieving marks in the distinction band. One particular strength of her teaching is that she prepares students for all parts of an exam; the aural and sight-reading tests are often left to chance and Jemma’s holistic approach advantages her students both as musicians and as exam candidates.

Jemma finds that goal setting is key to students’ progress, and that while these goals can involve sitting music exams, there are many alternatives to this, including preparation for in-school performances or playing for friends and family, local festival entry, improving sight-reading or making recordings as keepsakes.

Jemma has copious experience teaching children and young people, as well as adult learners, and is happy to take on beginners to advanced learners (Grade 8, Diploma, Junior Department/Music College/University entry). Jemma tends to deliver her lessons in person at her home studio in Epsom, but does offer online options or hybrid approaches where this can be helpful.
