About Jamie Brown Music Tuition

Jamie started his musical training at the age of 7, where at junior school he was encouraged to start classical guitar lessons which quickly progressed to playing bass guitar with the school orchestra and Doncaster Music Services’ bands and concert bands. He then started to want to learn to play keyboard and took some lessons. From this the natural progression to piano ensued.

At secondary school he continued bass guitar playing with the stage band and started playing with the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association under the direction of John Ellis MBE. He continued playing piano and classical guitar but also progressed to playing electric guitar and theatre organ. His basic training for Piano came from Donald Tune a piano virtuoso in Doncaster. He became the Musical Director for local Pantomime performances until moving on to further education.

He went on to join Doncaster Colleges’ Music section to study Music full time. He took direction from Dave Lane who furthered his passion for an eclectic mix of music but particularly in Jazz and the contemporaries. Whilst at the college he also took tuition from Jonathan Gooing on piano. He started to also develop an interest in Music Studio Technology and Theatre Technology. Bass guitar became a prominent skill and enabled him to work with lecturers and musicians such as Errol Rollings outside of college for masonic dinner dances and many other events throughout the year. Roles such as Musical Director for performances and theatre work were common, he also was the Musical Director for C.A.T.S (Carr-nival Accademy of Theatre Skills) and guest spots as a bassist for Stage Coach Theatre Arts.

At the end of his college years he decided to take the next step by joining Leeds College of Music studying for a Jazz and Contemporary Music Honours Degree. His time there enabled tuition from Richard Hammond (Bass player for Jane McDonald among others). Zoltan Dekany (BA M.Mus) on bass who was himself taught by Charlie Haden the infamous jazz bassist. Dr Mark Donlon for Ensemble studies, Dr Graham Hearn for Composition, John Anderson for Performance, Charlotte Orba for Composition and Critical Studies, Jamie Taylor for Historical Critical Analytical Studies and Trevor Vincent for Musical Theory. This took all the basic practical musical examinations taken throughout all his previous years to another level. He majored in Performance & Composition and wrote a dissertation on Jazz music and Perceptions within International Media Services.

After graduating in 2006 Jamie decided that his keyboard skills would once again come to the forefront of what he does in Music. He obtained a place at Leeds University on the Post Graduate Certificate of Secondary Education Music course under the supervision of course tutor Lynn Hudson who was also the chief musical examiner for the examination board. Whilst doing his practical teacher training he worked at Garforth Community College and Allerton Grange Secondary School. On conclusion of the course he then decided to work full time in a secondary school.

He obtained a position as an NQT at The Astley Cooper School in Hemel Hempstead. He continued to work there for 5 years developing the department and many major parts of school life. Throughout these years he also gained job responsibilities such as Learning Technologies’ Technician, Teacher of Technical Theatre, Joint Subject Leader for Music. His skills in Performance and Technology became very evident and sixth-form courses started to take up the majority of his time. He built a full digital recording studio for the school and upgraded the schools lighting and sound equipment to professional theatre standard. Many other projects (too many to mention here) have also been undertaken.

After the 5 years working in a school environment, he decided that a new venture was required. He started up his own private music teaching at home for Piano, Music Theory, BTEC Music Support, BTEC Tech Theatre Support and GCSE Music Support and Guidance.

He has worked for Stable Yard Music and Stable Yard Music School. teaching group lessons working at Hatfield House.

Most recently he has developed facilities with a dedicated outside office & Teaching Music Studio ready for you to have lessons in and he looks forward to seeing a new generation of musicians emerge under his direction.
