About Jamie

My teaching method is grounded in bringing music to the lesson that is enjoyable to play and rewarding to learn. I'm always working to expand my teaching repertoire to incorporate pieces that will engage different students with different interests. Growing up in Devon I was surrounded by folk music and it's always been my favourite music to play and also to teach. However I'm also experienced in teaching Classical, Jazz and Rock styles.
A normal lesson will start with some time to catch up on how you've been getting on over the week, any music you've enjoyed listening to, and an opportunity to play through material we covered in the last lesson. I'm always keen to adapt my musical practice to suit the preferences of the student so the bulk of the lesson will depend on what kind of approach we're taking. If the structure of graded examinations helps give you something to aim towards and a way to measure progress then I'm more than happy to go down this route and an average lesson will consist of working through the next section of a graded piece, learning exercises that focus on specific techniques in the piece with the addition of some scales practice or ear training. If you prefer a less formal approach then we might be focusing on learning a song or a tune that you can take to a folk session or play at an open mic, and exploring the multiple uses of techniques that are in the piece (trills on the mandolin or travis picking on the guitar for example).
For absolute beginners I'm always keen to start playing music you know and enjoy listening to right from the start, it's so much easier to get hooked on playing music when you enjoy the music you're learning. This might involve learning the chords for a song on Guitar or Piano, or learning a simple tune on the Mandolin or Tenor Banjo.
If you'd like to hear my music you can find me on Spotify under the name 'Jamie Rudd'.
I'm also in an originals band called Wesley, our Instagram handle is: @wesleytheband, and a ceidleigh band called Bonnie Blue: @bonniebluetrad
