About James
An award-winning jazz guitarist and educator based in London with over 6 years of teaching experience. Get in touch to book in a trial lesson!
James takes a student-led approach to his teaching, with a focus on making the lessons engaging, fun and rewarding for his students. He believes that nurturing a passion and enjoyment of music is essential in music tuition; teaching techniques are influenced greatly by this to ensure that students are enjoying learning and can reach their potentials. He cares greatly about what the student's musical interests are and adapts each lesson to this. Although he specialises in Jazz and improvised music (degree-level), James can deliver high-quality tuition across all genres (Classical, pop, rock, blues) and abilities.
The first lesson will usually involve:
- Discussing any goals, aims or motivations you might have in music, future lessons can then be planned in accordance with this
- Chatting about what music you enjoy listening to and would like to learn to play on the guitar
- ...Playing some guitar!...
Lessons will take place either at the students home or online. There is currently availability for at-home tuition across London. He currently teaches in Clapham, Hackney, Notting Hill, Bow, Holland Park, Greenwich and Sloane Square and he is looking to expand teaching in these areas (&surrounding areas).
James studied jazz guitar to degree level at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire graduating with a 1st class degree. He has also had 6+ years of guitar teaching experience, both privately and in schools, teaching all styles of guitar including jazz, classical, pop/rock and acoustic, to all ages and abilities. He has taught complete beginners and helped to prepare them for their first performances as well as helping advanced guitarists work towards conservatoire auditions.
As a professional guitarist, James has performed with various jazz groups In the UK, across Europe and in South Korea at both jazz festivals and concert venues. He has also done session guitar work in theatre pit bands and in recording sessions.
“James is an inspiring teacher. He is an enthusiastic, patient and a very knowledgeable teacher of guitar. With every lesson I have felt that I have made significant strides in my playing. He makes the difficult seem possible. Any student lucky enough to take lessons with James - at what ever l...
