About James

Professional tenor, conductor, and musicologist with 15 years teaching experience across various musical disciplines.

I read Music at the University of Cambridge and Royal Holloway, University of London (where I was awarded my PhD in 2020), and trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I have performed as a soloist and ensemble member throughout the UK and Europe, including with some of the country's leading choirs, orchestras, and opera companies. Performing highlights include my international opera debut as Ferrando in Mozart's Così fan tutte with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in Tallinn; singing and touring with renowned groups such as the Academy of Ancient Music, BBC Singers, and English Concert; and appearing as a soloist in concert performances at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Lancaster Priory, and Southwell Minster.

I have maintained a private teaching practice (in Singing, Music Theory, and Piano) for 15 years, alongside peripatetic teaching at leading independent schools in the south of England. I have also taught Music to degree level, including at Royal Holloway and the University of Oxford, and am a former member of the Academic Music Department at Chetham's School of Music. Fostering a close understanding of style, musicality, and technique is central to my instrumental and vocal teaching, while my interest in vocal health (which derives in part from my own therapeutic experiences with the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine) very much underpins my approach to singing tuition. Whether your interest is in classical, jazz, music theatre, or pop repertoire, I aim to create an enthusiastic and encouraging teaching environment, whatever your goals may be.
