About James
James is a highly experienced and well-qualified teacher; he is passionate about teaching and his main aim is to ensure all pupils enjoy lessons and inherit a love for playing and making music.
James recently returned from New Zealand where he was Director of Music at Nelson Cathedral, and before that at Harrow School Hong Kong. James was educated in the Midlands, and then at Trinity College London. James has been a music examiner for over 30 years. He has a great deal of experience as a performer as well as a teacher, and has made recordings and featured on live broadcasts for BBC TV and radio, as well as Hong Kong radio.
James lived and worked in and around London for several years where he taught in schools and privately. He now lives with his harpist wife, Lizzie, in the East Midlands where he is further building his teaching practice. He is a highly successful teacher, both in schools and privately, having taught beginners who have continued to grade 8 and beyond. James particularly enjoys working with adult beginners and teenagers. He has had many pupils achieve notable successes in diploma examinations and go on to music colleges and universities, including scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge.
James' approach is fairly relaxed and pupil-centred. He is a good diagnostician and designs teaching courses which focus on the areas of a pupil's technique and musical skills/perception that need the most attention.
James' approach with young beginners is relaxed and he always makes lessons fun as well as rewarding.
