About James Wheeler

Hi, I'm James Wheeler, welcome to my private tuition page, where you can book private lessons with me.

I've been teaching drums since around 2002, mostly at Bern's Drums, which was really the musical hub of Chichester before Bernie Smith retired. I was privately taught, firstly by Roy Hugget, in Portsmouth and more recently by the famous American drum teacher, author and former head of percussion at Boston's Berklee College, Gary Chaffee, whose material I am ideally placed to teach, usually to more advanced students. In fact, I would recommend his Patterns series of books to most of my pupils.

Many of my pupils have gone on to careers in music, one toured the world as a pro, another became head of music. My greatest achievement is my co-authorship of several scientific papers into the effects of drumming on the brain and neuroplasticity.

I played on the Thames Jazz River Cruise for many years and performed in too many bands to mention, including work as a studio session musician, and I currently play in Kind of Blue Live, the UK's official Miles Davis tribute band.

I'm proud to be dyslexic and thanks to motivational help from Dom Famularo, I returned to University to complete my BSc (Hons). Anyone who struggles with reading music or finding motivation for their academic studies, due to dyslexia, or visual stress, like I have, you've found the right drum teacher, I reckon!
