About Jack

Jack is an experienced Piano Teacher, Concert Pianist, Accompanist, Classroom Music Teacher and Scottish Fiddler. While classical music is his main specialism, he has taught a variety of styles over the years including Jazz, Pop and Rock.

His qualifications and prizes to date include being awarded: MMus/MPerf with Distinction (Advanced Instrumental Studies, Piano) (Guildhall School of Music and Drama); BMus (Hons) First Class (The University of Edinburgh); the Audrey Innes Trophy 2015 (1st place) – Edinburgh Concerto Competition; and performing as a semi-finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Piano Competition (02/03/2020).

Jack has worked in various fields within the music industry and teaches both instrumental and academic music. He is keen to embark on new challenges with pupils, whether that be learning a particular piece for an event, preparing for instrumental examinations, tutoring students for upcoming GCSE or CfE exams or guiding pupils through Music Theory exams. Jack always tries to make his classes as enjoyable as possible and understands the importance of tailoring lessons to suit the individual. The first lesson would be centred around this approach and would aim to discover the pupils ambitions, the styles of music they enjoy and to create a clear plan for learning.

Jack has a track record of success in giving individual piano instruction to children and adults, at different ages and stages in a variety of contexts. He has taught young people at both primary and secondary school, individually teaching piano to primary pupils from the Pilgrims’ School, Winchester and secondary age pupils at Winchester College. Jack has 11 years of experience of private teaching in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow. He also has experience of working with groups of children at all levels, having worked with primary aged pupils at a Suzuki Fiddle Group in Edinburgh and contributed as an accompanist and team member to a community music project, The BIG Project, in Edinburgh (Inspiring Volunteer Award 2016).

Having undertaken the PGDE course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and having discussed different approaches to teaching, he has an awareness of educational principles and pedagogical theories. He has taught children in Edinburgh using the Suzuki methodology and has taught children on the Orkney Traditional Music Project using the aural tradition.
