About Jack

Jack is a woodwind player and educator based in Lewisham. He is experienced at teaching adults and children/young people both clarinet and saxophone, as well as music theory and composition.

Teaching
Jack teaches clarinet (including E-flat/Bass clarinets) and saxophones (soprano/alto/tenor/baritone) across a number of styles including classical, jazz, pop and klezmer. Through a holistic approach, all students will experience some elements of these genres to inform their studies and interests. Jack also teaches music theory for the ABRSM syllabus and has experience teaching GCSE and A-level composition techniques.

Jack's teaching style stems from his energy and enthusiasm as a performer, which he shares with his audience and pupils. The best way to learn music is to have fun along the way and make this the primary objective, whether working towards music grades, school band pieces, major events (some clients have previously aimed for wedding performances!) or a performance of a favourite song/nursery rhyme to family and friends. Whatever the purpose of your study, you will be supported in your studies and lessons will be stimulating and fun so that progress and practice naturally follows on.

Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced pupil, Jack will make lessons fun and engaging and work with you towards your own goals. Lessons are uniquely tailored to the students interests while still striving to develop their playing to the best it can be. It is useful to have an agreed upon goal that both sides feel is realistic yet challenging and then bring in the different elements of learning music and an instrument into this naturally.

Jack has experience teaching adult learners in addition to children and young people – working towards grades or personal objectives as needed. He works regularly with children and young people both in and outside school settings, particularly with KS2 and KS3 students.

Beginners, especially younger students, are advised to start on a 20-30 minute lesson as playing initially can be hard work, and the lesson should be as enjoyable as possible. Intermediate and advanced students will benefit more from the full hour which allows more detailed work on technical and performance issues while learning about the pieces. Music Theory and Composition lessons are suited to 30-60 minute lessons depending on the student's age and ability level,...
