Are you looking to learn piano, or build on existing skills? Well look no further because I'm here to help! I'm Ian, a highly experienced piano, music theory and composition teacher based in London. I strongly believe that, whoever you are, when you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything you want and becoming a musician is no exception. Whether you would like to learn classical piano and earn your ABRSM qualifications, jazz improvisation, music theory, or composition, I would love to guide you on that journey as I'm passionate about passing on my knowledge.
My Approach
Lessons will always be tailored around what you want to learn and how you want to learn it. I am a firm believer in allowing my students to reach their goals in the way that will resonate with them most. I believe that, whatever your approach is, as long as you are willing to put in the time to practice, you will see the results you want, which is why I am highly flexible in my teaching approach. While this method allows students to learn in their own way, this won't stop me from introducing core concepts that I believe are vital in helping you become the musician you want to be.
In your first lesson, I will want to understand what interests you the most about music, what worries you, and what you want to avoid in your learning experience. The aim is to get a decent picture of exactly how you would like me to approach teaching you and how to plan for future lessons. Lessons take place at your residence, mine, or over video-call. For piano students, you will need a keyboard or piano to get the most out of my lessons.
Experience
I have 10 years of experience teaching piano, music theory and composition to students aged 2 up to 70 and older. These lessons have encompassed a wide range of skill levels from complete beginner up to grade 8 and beyond. I have taken several students through their ABRSM piano exams with a 100% pass rate and have achieved this both in person and online. My teaching experience comes from a variety of settings including classroom teaching in both primary and secondary schools, as well as private 1-1 tuition which has been my main focus over the last 10 years.
Along with my teaching experience, I have performed across the country as a pianist and have composed original music for television and theatre. I also co-run a popular YouTube channel all about music...
