About Hogarth Hannam

I want to inspire my students to be curious and help nurture in them the courage to explore deeply what they find meaningful in the music they love. Be it a beginner who needs the space to discover what they find interests them, with the support of a teacher who can guide them to develop a healthy technique, along with the theoretical skills and understanding to grow. Or the intermediate to advanced student who would like to work on a specific area with a more rigorous framework for development.

Age is no requirement, over the last few years as a private music tutor I have had the pleasure of working with a variety of ages of students with individual learning needs. This has led me to develop an inclusive approach that can be tailored to each student I take on. I see the learning of music to be a complex problem that doesn't have a fixed answer or pathway, the path is only found through exploring the challenges of music with the individual themselves. In my teaching I aim to equip the students I teach with the tools to problem solve on their own and give a framework through which they can progress towards their own goals.

A typical lesson might consist of the student bringing forward something they were working on or some music or some playing they were finding interesting. We would then listen to it together and then begin exploring approaches to improving or developing that idea. This may take the form of exercises, new practice routines, maybe a theoretical concept to underpin the process. As lessons progress, a direction can be established and longer term goals can be explored, we can discuss this in the first lesson, which I’m happy to do on a discounted ‘try before you buy’ basis. (If you send me a message I’ll explain the musicteachers offer system). If you find we do the first lesson and you aren’t sure, then thats okay.

Although drums was my first instrument, I am also a professional improvising pianist and composer, I studied both drums and piano as first study instruments whilst I was at University. I spend a great deal of time listening to and transcribing music, analysing it and incorporating that into my practice and playing. I hope that what ever you are interested in learning with me, I can share my love and insight but most of all create a nurturing space for curiosity and personal growth.

Below is a video of me playing drums with my band :)
