About Helen Matthews

Helen is a passionate and friendly woodwind and piano teacher. She offers specialist tuition on oboe and cor anglais, but also enjoys teaching flute, clarinet and saxophone up to grade 4 standard and piano up to grade 3. She loves teaching students of all ages and abilities, and she believes that everyone should be able to experience the power of music.

She tailors her teaching to each individual pupil, ensuring they make optimal progress and develop a lifelong love of learning their instrument, encouraging them to pursue chamber and ensemble music as appropriate. In addition, if her students do wish to pursue graded examinations, Helen has a wide knowledge of both the ABRSM and Trinity examination board syllabuses from Grade 1 to Diploma.

Helen holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she was an ABRSM and RCS Trust Scholar. During her studies, she gained side-by-side and apprenticeship schemes with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as placing as a finalist in both the Governors' Chamber and Solo Recital Competitions. She is extremely grateful to have studied under the inspiring tuition of Peter Dykes, Henry Clay, Stephen West (RSNO) and Stephane Rancourt (Halle).

During her studies, Helen also gained the ABRSM Diploma in Teaching (Distinction), which inspired her to pursue a career in education, leading to her gaining a PGCE with the University of Reading. She now works with the local music service offering woodwind tuition across Hampshire, and as a result she holds a full DBS check.

She teaches throughout weekday evenings and is able to teach online or travel to the pupil’s house for a small transport fee.
