About Gillian
Gillian is an experienced music teacher, teaching piano and singing up to Grade 8. She is also available for piano accompanying and coaching. She taught individual piano lessons at an independent school for two days a week before taking up the position as Head of Music in another school.
For 17 years she worked in this Independent school, writing the curriculum for whole school music, from Nursery and Kindergarten stages up to Year 6, and teaching singing, classroom percussion and composition and organising the visiting music teachers.
She was the Musical Director of several Musical shows such as 'Joseph', 'Oliver', 'Treasure Island', 'Robin Hood', 'Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Jungle Book', 'The Sound of Music' and accompanied all the shows, as well as arranging music and conducting the professional instrumentalists. She coached several choirs, and recorder groups, and conducted the string orchestra as well as the school orchestra, which she founded.
Her qualifications are G.R.S.M. and A.R.C.M., together with Certificate of Education from Homerton College, Cambridge. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Piano as her first instrument and violin second. Dalcroze Eurythmics was an essential part of the course, which involved improvisation of movement and music, and Keyboard Harmony and Choral conducting were also covered. She studied singing privately once she had had her family.
Gillian has also taken part in Carl Orff music courses which are specifically focused on children's musical development using a wide range of percussion, singing and movement to express the music in a variety of ways.
Teaching Approach
In private teaching, Gillian focuses on the individual potential of each student, encouraging at every stage and building confidence in their own innate abilities, using her experience in Carl Orff methods and Dalcroze Eurhythmics, together with improvisation and keyboard harmony skills. All genres of keyboard and piano music are taught, from Renaissance and Baroque music, to jazz, blues and rock styles, including all classical piano music from Mozart to Messiaen.
