Study with award-winning pianist Gema Lu Cai, with individually tailored lessons to help you reach your goals🎹🌟
Graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music specialising in Music Education, Gema is a Spanish/Chinese pianist based in Manchester. She has 6 years of experience teaching a wide range of students; whether you’re a beginner, young professional, preparing for exams, or just want to learn for fun. She has taught people of ages 2-53, believing it is never too late, or early, to start learning. When teaching children, she makes sure to always communicate with both parents and children so everyone is happy with the lessons. Gema has a wide experience teaching adults and is aware of the difficulties of learning a new skill while working full-time, so she makes sure to take each student’s personal circumstances into consideration when planning lessons. She also teaches in the three most spoken languages in the world: English, Spanish and Chinese; making her an ideal teacher if you want to improve your language skills while learning piano.
Genres
She teaches classical and pop repertoire, both in person and online. She has also taught these genres as a mix, and even adding improvisation and jazz to it.
A personalised approach
Gema loves getting to understand her students and tailoring everything to their personal needs, so she always plans in advance and is open for a chat beforehand. She understands every student learns at a different pace, and will accommodate to your own pacing. She does not believe in following one single tutoring book through, and will give you enough resources to learn effectively and holistically, adjusting the learning curve to your needs. She believes in good communication and assertive conversations, so she will always listen to you if you don’t think something is working.
She believes in a reflective and learner-centered approach, so you can be assured that YOU are the priority.
Looking to study grades?
Gema has successfully prepared all her ABRSM students to date and is able to teach Trinity, Rockschool and MTB syllabuses. She is also a piano teacher at a high school where she prepares GCSE students for their solo/ensemble performances.
A little more about Gema
About her experience as a performer, she has won 20 prizes in competitions and performed in 8 different countries (Spain, UK, France, Netherlands, Latvia, United States, Korea and Switzerland). At 12-years-old, she won her first competition, achieving first prizes at the Concourse Musical de France 2014 in Paris. A few years later, she was fortunate enough to perform in some of the most famous halls in the world, such as the Kenney Centre in Washington D.C and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
More recently, she was awarded the Clifford Hartley Award at the RNCM for achieving the highest grade in the Piano Pedagogy course. Earlier this year, she was also the first recipient of the Lucy Hale Award at the RNCM, which allowed her to buy her first piano, sponsored by Yamaha UK.
To this day Gema is certain that her passion is teaching and helping students unlock their potential, and she loves getting to know each student’s strengths, goals and passions. Communication and compassion are fundamental pillars of her teaching practice.
