About Gareth

Do you want to discover the joy of playing the flute? As an active performer, examiner and passionate teacher, I tailor every engaging lesson to you!

Whether picking up an instrument for the first time, returning after a break, or preparing for exams, my goal is to provide an enjoyable, structured musical journey focused on your goals. I provide a calm, encouraging, supportive environment where we work at your perfect pace.

Instruments & Levels Taught
• Flute (complete beginner to diploma/advanced)
• Baroque flute (alongside modern or on its own)
• Piano (beginner to upper intermediate)
• Piano accompaniment for exams/auditions

Teaching Approaches: As a qualified teacher (PGCE), former Director of Music, examiner and neurodivergent musician, I know a "one-size-fits-all" approach doesn't work. I foster a problem-solving, independent approach, breaking complex aspects into manageable steps so you never feel overwhelmed. I encourage you to build upon your interests and discover a broad range of styles. My lessons are inclusive, relaxed, and adapted to you. While exams are great for recognising progress, there is no obligation to take them. I use exams as a tool, encouraging a broad repertoire with the focus on enjoyment and performance.

Exam Prep (GCSE, A-Level, grades & diplomas): Get the insider advantage from an experienced examiner: As a current grade/diploma examiner, former senior A-Level and GCSE examiner, I know exactly what examiners want. I offer targeted clinics to help you manage performance anxiety, polish technique, and refine musicality to maximise outcomes. I also offer professional piano accompaniment.

Your First Lesson could include:
• A relaxed chat about your musical aims
• Making your first clear sounds (beginners) or
• A friendly, zero-pressure review of current repertoire (experienced)
• Help with technical matters, such as tone, articulation, and breathing
• Creating a personalised roadmap
• Leaving with a clear sense of achievement!

Possible Outcomes:
• Outstanding results in exams
• Improved technique, tone, problem-solving, and musicality
• Playing for relaxation and pure enjoyment
• A love for music and a sense of musical autonomy
