About Gareth W

Are you looking for a kind, patient, non-judgemental and exciting teacher who works at your/your child’s pace? Stop looking now! I create a warm, welcoming environment to learn, grow and have fun as a musician. I believe learning CAN be for everyone... you just need to find that someone who creates a relaxing, worry-free, and inspiring experience - a chance to grow and flourish in a safe and creative space. Not everyone starts from page one of the same book, because no two people are alike, so I adjust our learning plan to each and every student, individually.

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IN A PIANO LESSON?

Most lessons are tailored based on my experience teaching a wide range of students BUT whatever musical desire you have (passing a piano exam, preparing for a concert, improving your ears, or understanding music theory) YOU lead the session. If you’re unsure where to begin, I am of course happy to help you figure out which goals may be best for you BUT we keep a regular check on that, so you stay fresh, inspired and motivated.

We might start our lesson with a relaxing chat about how you feel about the piano that day, and how you feel your progress is going... checking in our mental health and self-honesty are big factors in having a successful lesson. Then after this, we might work on the piece/s you have chosen to bring along / listen to. We would learn the music carefully and slowly together, until you feel confident in performing it on your own. I would listen to your performance with a kind and open nature, noting areas of success and areas to develop. Together, we would then revisit these passages in a relaxed, patient and supported way.

At the end of a session we would take a moment to reflect... I always ask for (and I listen to) your feedback, to make sure the next session is even more tailored towards you / your needs. So if that session was a little too slow, we’ll go at a faster pace next time; if that session focused too much on technique and you’d rather get through lots of music, we’ll make sure to find a different balance the next time.

I often ask my students if they notice a difference in confidence by the end of our sessions – the answer is always a resounding "yes"! Like you, I am unique. :-)
