About Franklyn Oliver

Franklyn has established himself as a professional composer and teacher. His wide-ranging musical enthusiasms make him an ideal teacher for beginners or intermediate students looking to refine their musicianship. He has experience working with SEN children and takes great pride in providing music education to people with additional needs.

His teaching style is widely adaptable to the individual needs of his students, whilst always encouraging curiosity and developing an understanding of what motivates them.

Composition

Franklyn trained in composition with Sir George Benjamin and Dr Stephen Montague. His music has been described as "absolutely fantastic" by Stephen Fry.

Franklyn's teaching practice encourages students to find their own compositional voice. Through establishing a foundation in the knowledge of melody, harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint he equips his students with the skills required to explore their own compositional practice.

Music Theory

Franklyn specialises in teaching Grade 5 theory to his students, preparing them to pursue further instrumental grades. His teaching follows the ABRSM curriculum, arming students with the knowledge required to approach the exam with confidence.

Piano

When studying piano with Franklyn, it's his priority to inspire a connection between the instrument and his students. He teaches his students how to read music, play their favourite songs, and improvise, all while establishing a solid bed of technique which they can later rely on as their skills improve.

Trumpet

Franklyn has played the trumpet for eighteen years and has performed in orchestras, big bands, brass bands, and wind bands. In studying the trumpet with Franklyn, students will learn from a variety of repertoire, whilst learning about the importance of the trumpet in an ensemble setting.
