About Felicity H

Looking for a kind, patient, non-judgemental teacher who will work at your/your child’s pace? Look no further! I am a recent University of Oxford graduate, so I am very sympathetic to the daunting nature of being a student! I use this to instead create a warm, welcoming environment for all wishing to learn and grow (and have fun!) as musicians. I believe we learn at our best when we are relaxed and worry-free, so my lessons are holistic, making sure your mental health is prioritised during learning.

THE AVERAGE LESSON WITH ME

As my student, you can come to me with whatever musical desire you may have – whether that be passing your next ABRSM exam, working toward a concert, or honing your new secret talent on your own time! Whatever it may be, YOU lead the session. If you’re unsure where to begin, I am also happy to work with you to decide which goals may be best for you at this time.

Next, we will warm-up at a pace that suits you, working on things like posture, embouchure (mouth positioning), holding the instrument correctly, breathing/breath control and ear training. Warming up before playing is really crucial to healthy playing. It makes for a much more comfortable lesson! Age-dependent, we can make warming up very silly using games – though this may be aimed at my younger students, adult-learners are welcome to have just as much fun if they wish!!

After this, we will work on the piece/s you have chosen to bring to the session. We will learn the music carefully and slowly together, until you feel confident in performing it on your own. I will listen to your performance with a kind and open nature, noting areas of success and areas to develop in. We will then revisit these passages in a relaxed manner and we shall see improvement very quickly. I often ask my students if they notice a difference in confidence by the end of our sessions – the answer is always a resounding ‘yes’!

We will reflect on the session at the very end – I will really listen to your feedback and make sure the next session is even more tailored towards you and your needs. If the session was too slow, we’ll go at a faster pace; if the session focused too much on technique and you’d rather get through lots of music, we’ll make sure to find a balance next time. Whatever you require from out time together, I will do my absolutely best to deliver.
