About Emily
Emily is an inspiring, creative and enthusiastic teacher who aims to guide her students towards their musical goals. Whether it's working towards exams, or simply learning for fun, Emily believes that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of taking part in music and the arts in some variety and would find it a pleasure to be part of their students musical journey. For Emily it's not just about playing the Flute but playing the Flute and therefore likes to put a strong emphasis on musicality and characterisation within a piece of music - what story does the student think the composer is trying to portray and how can they bring that into their own?
Every student is different, and every student learns differently, and thats something that Emily likes to factor into lessons. Whether it's with cue cards, a pneumonic or a being little more straight to the point, she will work with you to find out what's best for you as a musician...whilst at the same time knowing when you can be pushed just that little bit more than you think!
The arts have always been in Emily's life - having taken part in drama and Flute lessons from a young age - and in 2019 was awarded a Mayor's Civic Award for her commitment to the Arts in her local borough. Outside of teaching, Emily is also a professional Chaperone for Theatre and TV/Film.
Teaching in Flute/Music Theory:
- Flute teaching open to students of any age/ability
- Music theory lessons available up to Grade 5
- Online and home visits available ( For online lessons some knowledge of the flute is recommended though not required)
For Beginners to the Flute
Emily understands that for younger students, a full sized Flute isn't always appropriate to start with. Therefore, younger beginner students have the option of starting learning on a Fife before moving on to a Flute (curved head if necessary) when ready. A Fife - with the exception of a few fingerings - plays exactly the same as a flute and provides a start and skills that are easily transferable to the Flute in the future.
Your First Flute Lesson
Your first lesson is about you! We'll be understanding what you want from the lessons - what are your musical goals...and of course a little about you! You'll learn the basics of the instrument - putting it together, posture, how to hold the flute, how to get a soun...
