Emily is a singer and musician based in Leeds. She has a Bachelors degree in Jazz Vocals at Leeds College of Music and has studied under the incredible Lauren Kinsella, Sally Burgess and Greg Maskalick, who are known worldwide for their musicianship and talents. Performance highlights include singing at the Royal Albert Hall, Ronnie Scotts, Jazz Leeds Festival, Derby Cathedral and Buxton Opera House. Currently, she is performing regularly around Leeds with her Big Band and bands ‘The Emily Kent Project’ and ‘Racoon Dog Soup’, who both perform contemporary, original content and have been recorded professionally. She has also supported world-renowned artists including Cleveland Watkiss, The Tim Garland and Jason Rubello Duo and Werker. Emily loves teaching and sharing her passion for music with others; she is patient and encouraging to all her students, enabling them to flourish and succeed musically. Learning an instrument gives a sense of achievement to the individual and can help develop self- confidence. She also believes music enriches people’s lives and education and that it is important for exploring one’s creativity and individualism.
Teaching in Vocals
Emily teaches vocals from beginners to advanced students from young children to amateur adults. She is encouraging to all her students to perform and work on what they are interested in, whether that is their favourite pop or Disney tune or an operatic Aria. Emily is able to offer graded exams to her students, working with the ABRSM and Trinity boards. Emily has a great knowledge of vocals and is able to communicate clearly with her students, keeping their interest at all times and tries using a range of teaching techniques, such as developing musicianship through composition, drawing, listening, clapping and dancing. She will work with her students to decide on an engaging and creative practise routine. She also works closely with vocal technique, performance, tone and improvisation in her lessons, while also encouraging her students to understand basic music theory and relating this to pieces. She aims to bring a sense of fun into her lessons and your practise, planning lessons to achieve your musical goals, whether that be an exam or performance.
Teaching in Piano
Emily teaches piano from beginners to intermediate students from young children to beginner adults. Emily is able to offer graded exams to her students, with the ABRSM board. Emily aims to keep her students interest at all times and tries using a range of teaching techniques, such as developing musicianship through composition, drawing, singing, listening and clapping. Emily uses personalised worksheets, exercises and games to bring fun into her lessons and your work, working with her students on new, creative practice ideas to bring to the lessons. She plans lessons to achieve the best from her students and their musical goals.
Genre
Emily has a good knowledge of a range of music styles including Pop, Folk and Classical and after completing her Bachelors in Jazz singing, Emily specialises in Jazz vocals and improvisation. She also has a wide experience with musical theatre performing and helping teach at Derby Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse and The Buxton Opera House.
First lesson
We will start with a brief chat about yourself, including what your interested in, how you want to spend these lessons and your experience on your instrument. We will start with some fun exercises to get warmed up and then move onto a new tune that you may know and feel comfortable learning/playing through.
Beginners
The only thing you’ll need to bring is yourself and if you have any ideas of what you would like to work on, please bring these to the lesson so you can start working on them!
