About Elizabeth C.

Elizabeth is a piano, clarinet and composition tutor based in Cornwall. Elizabeth has a wealth of teaching experience, with twelve years teaching and Head of Music experience at a range of schools and colleges. She greatly enjoys teaching and believes passionately in the importance of music, teaching creativity and the sense of wellbeing music provides.

As a musician she has worked as a pianist and clarinettist as well as a composer, and incorporates creativity and mindfulness into her daily practice. She received her PGCE (with OFSTED Outstanding in all categories) in 2009 and also holds a Masters in Music (MMus) from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Elizabeth provides online and in person (at home) tuition for piano and clarinet (beginner to advanced), and music theory (ABRSM/Trinity/RSL), as well as coursework, exam preparation and general tuition for GCSE, A' Level, BTEC and UAL Music and Music Technology.

Elizabeth consistently achieves excellent results for all her students. She differentiates her teaching to ensure her students progress well, enjoy their lessons and achieve success.

Teaching in Piano
Elizabeth teaches piano from beginners to advanced (Diploma level). Students range from young children to adults. Some of Elizabeth’s students choose to work towards graded exams (ABRSM/Trinity/Rock School) and these range from Grade 1 right up to Diploma level. Other students chose to learn pieces they enjoy and select their own repertoire, these tend to be those who are at intermediate level and have a good understanding of their skill level. There are also students who choose to work through classical music level books, to improve their technique and understanding of the piano, alongside learning popular pieces of their choosing. Quite a range!

Elizabeth caters to each individual student's needs and goals. For some, this is learning to read music and understanding music theory, alongside learning piano technique and developing their piano skills by playing a range of pieces with increasing difficulty. This is the most common approach, and as a classically trained pianist this is the approach Elizabeth recommends. However, there are adult students Elizabeth has taught that learn by ear and are not interested in learning to read notated music - for these student’s Elizabeth’s approach is teaching aural skills, and technique.

Her approach includes:
- Piano specific technique such as hand positioning, fingering and pedalling
- Technical exercises to support development such as technical exercises, scales and arpeggios
- Wide range of repertoire to develop you as a pianist
- Music theory (if you wish to read notated music and develop this)
- General musicianship
- Performance technique

Typically, student’s have a long-term goal and over a series of lessons we will work towards this.

Teaching in Clarinet
Elizabeth teaches clarinet from beginners to advanced (Diploma level). Students range from young children to adults. Some of Elizabeth’s students choose to work towards graded exams (ABRSM/Trinity) and these range from Grade 1 right up to Diploma level. Other students chose to learn pieces they enjoy and select their own repertoire, these tend to be those who are at intermediate level and have a good understanding of their skill level.

Elizabeth caters to each individual student's needs and goals. Her approach includes:
- Use of the breath
- Instrument specific technique including embouchure, tonguing, and fingering
- Appropriate repertoire to challenge and develop
- Musicianship skills
- Music theory
- Practise guidance

Typically, student’s have a long-term goal and over a series of lessons we will work towards this.

Teaching in Composition and Music Production
Elizabeth is an experienced composition and music production teacher. Students typically use DAWs such as Logic Studio and Garageband, and notation packages such as Sibelius.

Elizabeth caters for each student's individual needs; for some this may be learning specific composition techniques, such as writing effective harmonies using chords, and for others, specific music production techniques, such as E.Q and reverb. Some students require support for their qualifications (such as G.C.S.E and A’ Level), others are adult learners who have been composing for some time and require specific support or are new to composing and music production and require a more systematic approach to learning.

Elizabeth caters to each individual student's needs and goals. Her approach includes:
- Composing and producing electronic music
- Mixing and mastering techniques
- Songwriting
- Harmony and chord techniques
- Creative music production skills, such as sampling

Typically, student’s have a long-term goal and over a series of lessons we will work towards this.

Genre
Elizabeth is a classically trained musician and teaches a range of genres. Most commonly these are popular, jazz, blues, contemporary and classical (from 17th century to present day styles such as minimalism).

First lesson
During the first lesson Elizabeth will chat with you about what you would like to learn and achieve in your lessons (e.g. work towards a grade, learn the basics of an instrument, learn to play for your own enjoyment and fulfilment), your musical interests and experience in your instrument to date, or if you are a beginner, what drew you to learning an instrument. Elizabeth has many resources - instrumental books, sheet music, exercises, that we can use in your first lesson or if you already have a book or piece of music you would like to learn Elizabeth is equally happy to work with you in learning those. At the end of the lesson Elizabeth will set you work to practice before your next lesson.

Beginners
Learning to play a new instrument can be daunting but please be assured Elizabeth has plenty of experience teaching beginners and those whose confidence needs boosting. Students have commented on her warm, calm and approachable manner and many have continued to learn with her for several years. If you have any questions prior to booking, or after, Elizabeth is very happy to answer them for you.
