About Dorian K

Dorian is a very experienced teacher with a background in performance and composition. As a teacher, he has worked in 1-1, small and large group and ensemble contexts and currently works with the Bradford Music & Arts Service (including working with groups of hearing impaired children). He also works as an examiner for Trinity College London. Dorian can teach all brass instruments, in a variety of styles (from classical to jazz). He can also teach composition and jazz improvisation (for any instrument) and always endeavours to focus his lessons around the needs and aspirations of his pupils. Lessons can be taken with specific targets in mind (e.g. exams, diplomas, auditions etc) or just for fun and there’s no age limit!

Dorian has studied at some of the best musical establishments in the UK, including:
Royal College of Music
Trinity College of Music
London College of Music

As well as his teaching expertise, Dorian has produced a large portfolio of composition for over 30 short films, animations and documentaries and has over 200 media music tracks published. These have been featured in 11 different countries on channels including Sky 1, Sky 2, Discovery Channel and Living TV. He has also composed numerous choral works, ensemble arrangements and several music-based educational resources, and is currently the musical director of Saddleworth Male Voice Choir and The Oldham Choir. Dorian is also a very accomplished performer, with performance credits including Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond, Jamie Cullum, The Temptations and The Drifters.

Teaching in Brass
Dorian teaches the whole family of brass instruments, from beginner to advanced level (Grade 8 / Diploma level) and has extensive experience teaching pupils of all ages, from primary school age to mature students. Dorian has helped numerous pupils to pass music exams (with ABRSM, TCL & LCM exam boards), or your lessons can just be for fun!

Brass lessons would include:
- Establishing an efficient physical method - Posture and the balance between diaphragm support, air flow and the vibratory resistance (the embouchure).
- Developing tone quality and range
- Tonguing, production and fingering techniques
- Scales & Arpeggios
- Sight-reading, aural training & transposition
- Performance skills - finding and expressing the character of a piece

Teaching in Composition
Dorian can teach composition in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, choral, latin and singer-songwriter.

Lessons in composition would include:
- Harmony
- Structure & form
- Texture & Orchestration
- Composing to a specific brief - including moving or still picture and the written word
- Arranging & Transcription

Teaching in Improvisation
Dorian can teach improvisation to pupils playing any instrument and in a variety of styles including jazz, latin, funk & blues.

Lessons in improvisation would include working on:
- Harmony & chord extensions
- Scales & arpeggios
- Harmonic and rhythmic patterns
- Structure & form
- Stylistic characteristics

First Lesson
During the first lesson it’s always good to get know each other so initially pupils are encouraged to discuss why they have decided to take up lessons, their musical history, what aspects of their playing they would like to work on and their aspirations for the future.

Beginners
If you are just starting out Dorian will go over the fundamental aspects of brass playing (air-flow and vibration), discuss positive habits, as well provide you with an easy to follow practice routine. He will also suggest which music books to buy, based on the music that you would like to play.
