About David Douglas
David is one of the most experienced guitar tutors in the UK, having taught electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass guitar for over 34 years to literally hundreds of people. He has played in 24 bands of diverse styles and also performed extensively as a solo guitarist. Many of his students have themselves gone on to play in bands, either professionally or semiprofessionally, and some have even become guitar teachers! As everyone knows, there is no substitute for the kind of expertise which comes from experience.
David's lessons are designed to be informal, flexible and enjoyable, and he has developed a relaxed, friendly teaching style which aims to put you at your ease. The lessons are one to one and proceed in a step by step fashion at the pupil's own pace. David explains every musical idea very clearly, and he is sensitive to each student's individual learning needs; the first lesson includes a careful assessment of the latter, which are then regularly reviewed.
Students of all levels of ability, from beginner to advanced, are welcome. The subjects covered relate to every aspect of guitar (or bass guitar) playing, and you are encouraged to indicate those areas which interest you most. Available topics include (but are not limited to):
technique, both left and right hand, from basic to advanced;
theory, including chord construction, chord progressions, and chord - scale relationships;
strumming and fingerpicking (including alternating bass styles);
chord and scale vocabulary;
improvisation;
composition;
timing skills;
chord embellishment;
tone production (how to achieve a first class sound);
mastering string bending, vibrato, slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs etc.;
ear training;
alternative tunings;
repertoire;
using amplification and effects skillfully;
creating your own solo arrangements;
versatility (familiarity with all the main musical genres);
jazz harmony;
chord voicing;
rock, blues and jazz licks;
understanding how to skillfully use a capo.
