About David G. B.
David is probably one of the most experienced instrumental tutors in the UK, having taught the guitar and bass guitar for over 32 years to literally hundreds of students. He has played in 24 bands of diverse styles and performed extensively as a solo guitarist. Many of his students have themselves gone on to play in bands, either professionally or semiprofessionally, and some have even become guitar teachers! As everyone knows, there is no substitute for the kind of expertise which comes from experience.
David's lessons are designed to be informal, flexible and enjoyable. He has developed a relaxed, friendly teaching style which aims to put students at their ease. All lessons are taught one-to-one and proceed in a step by step fashion at the student's own pace. The emphasis is on clear explanation and achieving the optimum balance between musical discipline and having fun.
When you study a musical instrument you should not be "force fed" information in a rigid way, since everyone's needs are different; for this reason David tailors his material and presentation specifically to the person in front of him. He encourages everyone he teaches to think about and communicate their learning objectives; every guitar (or bass) student is a unique individual with her or his own musical tastes and level of ability.
The subjects covered during lessons relate to all aspects of guitar (or bass guitar), and students are encouraged to indicate those areas which interest them most. Available topics include:
technique (both left and right hand) from basic to advanced;
theory (including chord construction, understanding chord progressions, and scale theory);
improvisation;
composition;
repertoire (learning to play songs!);
timing skills;
tone production;
expression ("playing from the heart");
creating solo arrangements;
strumming and picking;
chord vocabulary;
scale vocabulary;
ear training;
versatility (familiarity with the styles and techniques of the main musical genres);
jazz harmony and chord voicing;
stage skills;
home recording techniques;
how to use amplification and effects skilfully
David plays and teaches a broad range of styles including pop, rock, folk, blues, jazz, classical, country and funk. Though a versatile performer, he currently specialises in playing solo jazz guitar. His formal qualifications include a Diploma in Music from Keele University, Staffordshire, UK and an honours degree in philosophy from the University of London.
