About Conor M

Conor Masterson (BMus(hons), MMUS) is an experienced violin/viola tutor with 10+ years experience teaching students of all ages from beginners to diploma level. He graduated in 2017 from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with his Bachelors with honours and Masters degrees in classical violin performance. Alongside teaching Conor is an experienced performing classical and session violinist working with both professional orchestras and ensembles as well as various pop artists throughout the world.

Conor specialises in classical violin/viola tuition, but also provides skills in session playing, recording and chamber music development. Student development and goal settings will be lead by a structured methodology of three parts; scale and arpeggio study, classical violin/viola technique and standard classical repertoire.

Conor's teaching philosophy is student centred, with the student encouraged to actively participate and engage in each lesson so as they are able to lead their own personal practice and development outside of the lesson successfully.

Whilst studying at the Guildhall Conor took on the elective of violin pedological techniques with Professor Evan Rothstein, researching many different schools of violin teaching ranging from the traditional master>pupil, to more modern conceptions of a teacher student relationship and exploring how to tailor to each individual student’s learning capabilities.

After analysing different methods of technical teaching ranging from traditional methods such as the Galamian and the Russian School of violin and modern teaching schools such as the Suzuki and the Rolland methods he was able to implement his own teaching philosophy, using trusted techniques from a wide range of celebrated violin schools and teaching methodologies, which lead to obtaining a distinction for this piece of research.

To get the most out of Conor's teaching it is recommended students have weekly lessons of 30-60 minutes, depending on ability level, with a preference for in person lessons. Students will need to provide their own suitable instrument and Conor is happy to help with sourcing for all students.

Having been an employee of the education authority Northern Ireland, Conor has experience working with students ages 6-19 and teach from complete beginner to advanced grade 8+ level.
