About Clare A.
I have a love for music and a passion for sharing this with students. I have taught many people from all walks of life (children and adults) and take an adaptive approach to teaching.
I love to teach music theory as well as music history. I like my students to understand the wider context behind what it is they are playing which gives them a strong musical understanding. I also incorporate lots of singing into my lessons, particularly with the younger students as this helps develop their ear.
I follow the ABRSM grade system and have a 100% pass rate (including grade 5 theory). I currently teach grades 1 - 5. I encourage students to take grades (particularly children) as it gives them performance experience but ultimately leave it optional. I understand exams come with exam stress and like to deal with this head on!
I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always keen to learn new skills. I believe putting myself in the position of student improves my abilities as a teacher.
Finally, I try as best as I can to make every lesson fun and exciting for my students even when covering the “boring” but necessary bits such as scales!
In the first lesson, if the student is a complete beginner there is no need to bring anything. I like to use the first lesson to get to know each other. We will discuss the kinds of music the student would like to learn (and music in general!) and I will give an introductory lesson. In subsequent lessons I will recommend books that will be appropriate for further learning. If the student already has experience, I will encourage them to bring something they have already learnt so I can assess the kind of level they are at.
