About Claire
Enjoy learning music in my dedicated room in Ceres, near Cupar, where I have a Bluthner upright piano, my violin, viola and mandolin, two djembe drums, various other percussion instruments and a huge collection of printed music. Lessons are varied, fun and inspiring as I have lots of different skills to share. Twice a year take the opportunity to play and/or sing to your family and friends in a concert in a local hall and show them what you can do.
A bit more about me: I now mainly perform violin and piano but in the past I've directed children's and adults' choirs and orchestras and studied music to MA level. I have been teaching privately for fifteen years and have taught pupils for ten years at a stretch, taking them to Grade 8 distinction, or wherever they want to go! I give all my pupils the opportunity to play in informal concerts twice a year as this gives them a goal to work towards and brings everyone together.
In terms of my qualifications: I learned violin at the Junior Guildhall School of Music in London with Simon Fischer, himself a pupil of Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School of Music, who was a famously good teacher of violin technique. I have ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in violin and piano, a distinction in the ABRSM Diploma in Piano Performance and a first class degree in music from Cambridge University. Nowadays I regularly perform chamber music with friends on both piano and violin.
Tutoring Experience
I have taught violin and piano up to and beyond Grade 8, and I also teach viola, music theory and singing (for fun). I have pupils of all ages and I love the variety of people that come through my door.
Tutoring Approach
My teaching approach is very flexible and pupil centred. My aim is to make each lesson enjoyable and fulfilling while encouraging pupils to practise between lessons. I want all my pupils to feel fulfilled whatever their ability, and try to discover their strengths, likes and dislikes so that they can go as far as possible on their musical journey. I improvise with my pupils if they enjoy it and use percussion instruments (djembe drums etc), note cards, pebbles and other resources with little ones to make their lessons as interesting and varied as possible. I am also able to stretch advanced students as I have a very strong grasp of musical language and violin and piano technique.
