About Charis
Ms Charis Yan Yin Lai
Charis is an accomplished oboist and cor anglais player with a robust educational background and impressive professional experience. She graduated with distinction for Master of Performance in Orchestral Artistry at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she also completed her Bachelor of Music in Classical Oboe with distinction as well. She has also second studied piano with Gary Beecher in Guildhall in her undergrad.
She has been awarded several scholarships and awards including the Musicians’ Company Orchestral Artistry Scholarship and multiple Guildhall School Trust awards. She then joined the Musicians’ company as a young artist.
Professionally, Charis has been a trialist with the BBCSO and BBC philharmonic orchestra as Principal Cor Anglais;
freelancing in Philharmonia Orchestra, BBCNOW and Sinfonia Smith Square.
She has also been a part of significant music festivals and competitions, notably winning the Guildhall Oboe Prize in June 2024 and the Guildhall Cor Anglais Prize in November 2023.
In addition to her performance skills, Charis is a certified piano recitalist in ATCL. Having accompanied in international competitions and regularly across London. She is also in service at the Music in Office and West London free School. In her spare time, she enjoys read making with Netflix and crocheting.
