About Callum S

Callum is a fun, patient and kind teacher who focusses on enthusing his students to enjoy music making. Callum graduated from Goldsmiths College, University of London with a First in Music (Hons). He teaches for music services around Cheshire and conducts for Cheshire Pop Choirs. When he isn’t teaching he enjoys singing professionally for Opera companies around the country and has been a young artist for Opera North and English National Opera.

Teaching in Singing
Callum teaches singers from age 5 and up. He believes it is never too late to improve your singing/playing and really enjoys seeing both his younger and more mature students grow in confidence through their practice. Vocal lessons will always begin with warms ups and technical exercises (this is where most vocal improvement comes from) including sirens, vowel exercises and tension releasing physical exercises. Lessons then move on songs which Callum accompanies on his piano.

Teaching in Cello and Piano
For cello and piano, lessons will always start with finger exercises in order to warm up our fingers! Lessons will involve scales and pieces (the fun bit) but will also include sight reading (only sparingly he promises). A cup of tea/coffee is always on offer to all, and a separate private room with TV and books available for parents/guardians!

Callum teaches almost all genres of music but generally focuses on musical theatre and pop. As a professional opera singer he always has classical repertoire available if you’re looking to challenge yourself. For piano and cello Callum focusses on classical and jazz but is also willing to teach other styles.

First lesson
A first lesson involves a lot of warm ups in order to get to know your voice. The first lesson will also include some conversations about what you as a singer enjoy singing and what you think is great about your voice. For cello and piano lessons, you will start with an exploration of the instrument, so you can see what interests you about the instrument. Then some easy exercises and an introduction to reading music.

Beginner singers and pianists need not bring anything other than a positive attitude and any music that they perhaps have always wanted to learn. Cellist beginners will need their own cello, but Callum knows all the best places to hire a cello cheaply!
