About Brett

Liverpool-based composer and classical guitarist, currently studying a Master’s degree in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). I have extensive experience composing and arranging in a variety of styles for both chamber and orchestral ensembles. My work has been performed, recorded, and workshopped by groups such as Opera North, Psappha, Explore Ensemble, Ligeti Quartet, and ArkEnsemble. Highlights include a 2023 commission for Leeds Lieder Festival, and a collaboration with Tim Burgess (The Charlatans) and Helen O’Hara (Dexys Midnight Runners), creating orchestral arrangements for their 2025 concerts.

As a classical guitarist, I studied under Peter Batchelar (a former student of John Williams) at Leeds Conservatoire and have taken part in several masterclasses with Marek Pasieczny. I have several years of professional experience performing and teaching guitar.

I have successfully supported my students in achieving ABRSM exam results up to Grade 8 in both classical guitar and music theory. I tailor lessons to each student’s goals and interests. My approach is structured yet flexible, and focuses on nurturing each student’s intuitive musical voice - guiding them toward expressive choices that are both personal and sensitive to the language of the repertoire.

I believe in making classical music accessible to all - whether you’re already well-versed in notation, an electric guitarist transitioning from playing by ear or using tab, or looking to deepen your understanding of music theory as it relates to the guitar. I tailor each lesson to your individual musical goals.
