About Benedict

Benedict Taylor is a performer, teacher and composer based in London. He studied viola / performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, followed by undertaking a masters degree in Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Benedict maintains a busy teaching practice for viola, violin, music theory, chamber music and improvisation working with all levels of student from beginner to advanced across all age groups. He has spent many years teaching at institutions for younger students including: Royal College of Music Junior Department, Royal Northern College of Music Junior School, Royal Northern College of Music Junior Strings Project, Live Music Now, Lambeth Music Service, Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, Mumbai.

In higher education he has been involved with a number of institutions, giving lectures and seminars in performance, improvisation & composition, contemporary/extended string techniques working with colleges including: Royal College of Music, Goldsmiths, University of London, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, City University London, Royal Holloway College, York University.

Described as a virtuoso violist, in his performance work he has featured at notable festivals, venues and radio stations including; Spitalfields Festival, Spontaneous Music Festival Poland, Jazz en Nord France, Shinjuku Pit Inn Tokyo, Cafe Oto, The Vortex, London Contemporary Music Festival, Kings Place, Ronnie Scott's, New Wave of Jazz Belgium, Aldeburgh Festival, Fete de la Musique Berlin, Schloss Solitude Stuttgart, Galway Jazz Festival, Nonclassical London, Southbank Centre, Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, ICA London, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Live Music Now (outreach charity), BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 2, Resonance FM, Radio Libertaire Paris, BBC Late Junction, BBC Hear and Now.

As an award winning composer for film, theatre and television, he has written for over 35 feature films, shorts, television/online series and stage plays in both commercial and independent areas (Netflix, Amazon, Blumhouse, Film London, Ivanhoe) with his work showing at leading film festivals and theatre venues including; MoMA New York, Rotterdam Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Berlinale, Palm Springs Film Festival, London Film Festival, Royal Court Theatre, Trafalgar Studios London, Edinburgh Fringe, BFI, NCPA Mumbai.
