About Alisdair J. M.
From the first time Alisdair picked up a pair of drumsticks at age 11, he has been honing and building his ability and understanding of Drum-kit playing. 18 years on, Alisdair has built up a strong repertoire of knowledge that incorporates rhythm, feel, timekeeping, musicality, and music reading proficiency. After gaining a BA Honours Degree in Music Production Alisdair’s career has seen him recording, mixing, and creating drum tracks for talented music artists. His music projects have been picked up by several independent record labels internationally and have been aired on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC WM and Triple J to name a few.
Aside from his musical ability, Alisdair has garnered a breadth of teaching experience in local music establishments and schools. His teaching is largely based around a heuristic process. This involves the student being placed as an independent discoverer, who takes the initiative in solving their drumming problems. Teach learners fishing instead of giving them fish. An intrinsic element of Alisdair’s teaching has been guided by his on-going MSc Psychology studies. This learning has built upon his understanding of child and adult development and the ways in which neurotypical and neurodivergent learners navigate decisions, reasoning and problem-solving.
At the heart of Alisdair’s teaching is his ability to instil patience and perseverance in his students. Learning a musical instrument is often a magical experience but sometimes a frustrating one too. Increasingly then, the ability for a teacher to redirect that frustration towards a solution is paramount.
