About Alex

I am an open-minded and flexible player and I believe this also reflects in my teaching style. Whether you are seeking playing for fun or wanting to implement a more rigid practice plan, I can help guide you through our lessons to reach these goals.

I am an enthusiastic teacher and musician, with over 15 years experience playing clarinet and saxophone. I graduated with a 1st class degree in Music from The University of Sheffield and went on to do a master's in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, graduating with a Distinction. I have experience teaching from beginner to Grade 8 level as well as a range of ages (4-75).

I have been a freelance and peripatetic teacher for over 6 years. I am very familiar with the Trinity and ABRSM exam systems, if this is something you are keen to work towards and I am able to teach up to diploma standard on both clarinet and saxophone. For grades, I have extensive knowledge of the classical repertoire, having been trained with top classical clarinettists within the UK. Additionally, I have a good understanding of theory and composition techniques, if this is something that you may also need help with.

The goals of the student is the highest priority and each lesson is tailored to these. I strive to uphold a safe and comfortable learning environment where the student can feel able to experiment and build their confidence through music-making.

I also work as a freelance woodwind player, specialising in contemporary and cross-genre music. I am a member several groups and regularly take on freelance work in folk, pop, jazz, contemporary and classical settings. I have performed across the UK at festivals such as Celtic Connections, Cambridge Folk Festival, and venues such as Stoller Hall, Kings Place, Woolwich Works and the Brighton Dome. My current playing interests lie with more experimental and contemporary sounds, blending extended technique with improvisation on clarinet and bass clarinet.
