The sun-drenched landscapes of a Greek island, the infectious tunes of ABBA, and a group of aspiring performers chasing their dreams – welcome to the Mamma Mia "I Have a Dream" competition. In a unique twist on the classic musical's iconic song, this competition invited talented individuals from around the world to turn their dreams into reality in the search for the new Sky and Sophie in the West End's musical MAMMA MIA!

The Birth of a Dream

Inspired by the timeless themes of ambition, love, and self-discovery portrayed in the Mamma Mia musical, the "I Have a Dream" reality competition seeked to unearth talents and provide a platform for aspiring performers. Musical theatre performers brought their unique skills to the forefront in pursuit of a dream opportunity to shine in the spotlight and become the next Sky or Sophie.

 

Auditions and Selection Process

The competition kicked off with a series of auditions allowing contestants to showcase their talents and share their personal stories. An esteemed panel of judges Alan Carr, Jessie Ware, Amber Riley and Samantha Barks, under the watchful eye of the creator and global producer of MAMMA MIA! Judy Craymer, carefully assessed each audition, searching for individuals who not only possess exceptional talent but also embody the spirit of Mamma Mia's narrative.

 

Living the Mamma Mia Experience

14 contestants consisting of 7 females and 7 males, embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to a Greek island hideaway, mirroring the enchanting backdrop of the Mamma Mia story. Here, they immersed themselves in the world of the musical; living, rehearsing, and bonding with fellow competitors. The competition is not just about showcasing talent; it's about living the dream and experiencing the transformative power of the Mamma Mia narrative firsthand.

 

Challenges and Collaborations

Throughout the competition, contestants faced a series of challenges that tested their versatility, creativity, and ability to work as part of an ensemble, individually and together with a Sky or Sophie. From recreating iconic Mamma Mia scenes to collaborating on original performances inspired by ABBA's timeless music, the challenges pushed contestants to explore the depths of their artistic abilities.

 

Mentorship and Guidance

Renowned mentors - choreographer Anthony Van Laast and musical director Martin Lowe provided valuable guidance and feedback to the contestants. The mentorship aspect added a unique layer to the competition, offering participants the opportunity to learn from the best and refine their craft in a supportive and nurturing environment.

 

The Grand Finale

The culmination of the "I Have a Dream" competition was a spectacular grand finale.The remaining 4 contestants performed in front of a live audience and their panel of distinguished judges on the very stage the two winners will be performing MAMMA MIA! in the upcoming months. The stakes were high as the dream of winning the competition and stepping into the limelight became a reality for two talented individuals. The winners secured the lead roles in the West End production of MAMMA MIA!  at the Novello Theatre, London.

Beyond the glitz and glamour, the Mamma Mia "I Have a Dream" competition leaves a lasting impact on the lives of its participants. Congratulations to the winners Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley who were picked by the audience in the spectacular finale. They now head straight into rehearsals for their debut as Sophie and Sky on the 29th January 2024 at London's Novello Theatre.
